THE DEFINING MOMENT is an opportunity for young dancers to perform on the REDEFINE dance stage- ensuring a safe, supportive, and encouraging environment. Young dancers are often privileged with the opportunity to perform on stage, but all too often it’s interlaced with the underlying pressure of scores, awards, and trophies. THE DEFINING MOMENT replaces these with real life opportunities- such as scholarships and opportunities that will offer further training to young dancers.
Dancers will receive feedback directly from the REDEFINE panel. In an exclusive opportunity to REDEFINE, THE DEFINING MOMENT will require dancer(s) to perform each dance twice- once before and once after feedback. Here at REDEFINE, we believe the convention circuit is missing an opportunity to offer young dancers what is critical both in life and the industry: the ability to receive and apply feedback. In mainstream dance culture, young dancers receive critiques days to weeks after performing and might not have had the chance to apply notes in between performance opportunities. As dancers, training itself is grounded in the ability to receive and apply corrections. Yet, when it comes to performance training we strip this away and replace it with paper certificates and trophies- which can ultimately be a disservice to dancers in many ways (emotional and psychological). While we acknowledge the common system can push dancers to become better and there is beauty in that, REDEFINE also believes there is another way to reach that growth.
THE DEFINING MOMENT is a step towards that bigger goal of creating a healthier path to individual and collective growth as dancers. Through an inclusive, immersive, and progressive approach, THE DEFINING MOMENT will change the future of how young dancers approach, experience, and learn from performance opportunities.
It’s up to each of you to DEFINE YOUR MOMENT. IT’S YOURS.
